IDS Symposium postponed until August 2023
15 March 2022
Due to the uncertainty related to logistics and the ongoing global pandemic, the IDS Board, in consultation
with the IDS 2022 Organizing Committee, has decided unanimously to postpone the Symposium until
August 2023. The deadline for the video competition will be extended. A smaller “pre-event” for Dostoevsky
scholars will be held at the original planned time.
Papers already accepted will be included in the 2023 program. A new call for papers for the August 2023
Symposium, along with other details, will be announced at a later date. If you have questions in the
meantime, please contact the Organizing Committee at ids2022n-office_gg@nufs.ac.jp.
We are sorry for the inconvenience, sad that we will not be able to see everyone in Nagoya this year, and
grateful for your patience and understanding in this difficult time. Please check the Symposium site
(https://www.ids2022n.jp/) for a more detailed announcement from the Organizing Committee, and stay
tuned to the IDS website for updates.

Совет МОД, посоветовавшись с Организационным комитетом (IDS 2022), единодушно приняло
решение отложить Симпозиум до августа 2023 г. Срок конкурса видео тоже отложен. Будет проведено
в Нагое небольшое «предварительное мероприятие» для Достоевсковедов в августе 2022 г.
Все уже принятые тезисы остаются в программе Симпозиума 2023 г. Будет также объявлен новый
раунд заявок. Если у Вас вопросы, можно обратиться к Оргкомитету по адресу:

Понимаем, как это неудобно многим из Вас. Нам очень жаль, что невозможно будет видеть всех в

The Organizing Committee wishes to thank all the many Dostoevsky scholars who submitted their abstract.
The program committee has completed its difficult, but pleasant work quickly and decided to accept almost
120 papers in total. A letter of acceptance has been sent to each prospective participant.
We would like to remind you, however, that the Organizing Committee is still considering alternative dates
for the Symposium, which was originally scheduled for March 4-8, 2022. Please be aware that at this
moment the Japanese government allows practically nobody from abroad to enter Japan and it is hard to
predict when the restrictions on international travel will be lifted.
It will take some more time to come to the final decision, but we expect to notify you of our decision and
alternative dates (in case of postponement) on October 10, 2021. At the same time, we will also post the
information about registration, hotel reservation, visa support, travel grants, etc. on our website.
Anyway, we are sure we will see each other at the symposium in the not-so-distant future. Until then we will
keep you posted.

альтернативные даты проведения симпозиума, который первоначально был запланирован на 4-8
марта 2022 года. К Вашему сведению, на данный момент японское правительство практически
никому из-за рубежа не разрешает въезд в Японию, и трудно предсказать, когда ограничения на
международные поездки будут сняты.
Для принятия окончательного решения потребуется еще некоторое время, но мы рассчитываем
уведомить вас о нашем решении и альтернативных датах (в случае переноса) к 10 октября. В это же
время мы разместим на нашем сайте информацию о регистрации, бронировании гостиниц, визовой
поддержке, грантах на поездки и т.д.

Extension of the Deadline for Submissions
Dear colleagues and friends,
The Organizing Committee has decided to extend the deadline for submission of abstracts from July 31 to
August 20. We look forward to receiving more submissions from you. In accordance with this extension, the
date for the announcement of acceptance of your papers will be changed to September 10.
The Organizing Committee is currently making preparations based on the assumption that the symposium
can be held in Nagoya in March 2022 as scheduled in person (not on-line). However, we are aware that,
depending on the pandemic situation and the resulting international travel restrictions, we will also have to
take into consideration the possibility of postponing the symposium until a safer time when you can really
enjoy your travel to Japan. If we come to the conclusion that the symposium should be postponed, we will
make the announcement on September 10, after obtaining the agreement of IDS.

Financial Support
1 Travel Grant
We are glad to announce that the Organizing Committee has set aside modest funds for participants from
overseas who need assistance with their travel expenses to Japan. After reviewing the applications, the
Organizing Committee will provide up to $500 per person for 10 participants.
2 Exemption from the participation fee
We have also decided to exempt from the participation fee 10 domestic participants who are graduate
students or need financial support.
Information on how to apply for the travel grant and exemption of the participation fee will be announced
on September 10.

Организационный комитет принял решение продлить срок подачи тезисов докладов с 31 июля до 20
августа. Мы надеемся получить от вас больше заявок. В соответствии с этим продлением, дата
объявления о принятии ваших докладов будет изменена на 10 сентября.
В настоящее время Организационный комитет проводит подготовительную работу, исходя из
предположения, что симпозиум может быть проведен в Нагое в марте 2022 года, как запланировано,
в очной форме (не в режиме онлайн). Однако мы осознаем, что в зависимости от ситуации с

Nagoya is situated in the very center of
Japan, serving as a terminal for public
transportation services. Whether enjoying
travel in Central Japan or in the Hokuriku
region, Nagoya is incredibly convenient as
a gateway. Via the Shinkansen bullet train,
Kyoto is about 35 minutes away, Osaka
about 55 minutes and Tokyo about 100 minutes.
Getting to anywhere in Japan is easy from Nagoya.

The new satellite campus of Nagoya
University of Foreign Studies is
conveniently located in one of the largest
AEON malls in Japan, just a 12-minute walk
from Nagoya Station. The total classroom
area is over 7000 square metres.

The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry & Technology
Established by the Toyota group, this
museum preserves and uses a factory
building used during the Taisho era (1912–
1926) which still remains in the birthplace
of the Toyota group as an industrial
heritage. Within its walls are the Textile
Machinery Pavilion and Automobile Pavilion,
where you are introduced to and can easily
learn about shifts in technologies of the
industry, mainly with textile machinery and
automobiles the Toyota group has been
involved in, through dynamic displays as well as machine demonstrations by operators. Enjoy a full day here
with the additional museum shop, restaurant, cafe, and library.

Nagoya Castle (Nagoyajō) was built in the
beginning of the Edo Period as the seat of
one of the three branches of the ruling
Tokugawa family, the Owari branch. As
such, it was one of the largest castles in
the country, and the castle town around it
ultimately grew to become Japan's fourth
largest city. Most castle buildings were
destroyed in the air raids of 1945, including
the castle keep and the palace buildings.
The current ferro-concrete reconstruction of
the castle keep dates from 1959 and - before
its closure in May 2018 - contained a modern
museum with exhibits about the castle's history.
The park surrounding the castle keep features
two circles of moats and impressive walls with corner turrets. It becomes an attractive hanami spot during the cherry
blossom season which usually peaks in late March or early April.
